In 2015, Berenschot approached us with the question if we could help them "present their vision in a clear and presentable way" while seeking advice on the suitable format, whether it should be a website, a book, an animation or something else. The goal was to share it easily with clients, to be able to present it during meetings, include it in offers or lectures, and make it multifunctional. We gladly accepted the challenge and five years later, we created Manifesto 2.0, the updated version for organization design.

How will you use it?

We started by brainstorming on the most suitable communication tool, considering its usage - something that could be taken along, left behind and preferably multifunctional. We came up with the idea of creating an interactive booklet where customers could also draw their own organization design, which immediately stimulates them to get started.

Co-creation

Our process often begins with a Design Thinking workshop, where we brainstorm over possible design directions, the subject matter itself, which in this case was Berenschot's vision on organizational design. We also explore various design styles and sketch them out. By the end of the session, we ensure that all visuals have been worked out and discussed concretely, which we can then refine further.

From idea to concept

Met een interactief ontwerp wilden we de gebruikers prikkelen en uitnodigen om direct zelf aan de slag te gaan. We vonden het belangrijk dat de tekeningen eruit moesten zien alsof je ze kon tekenen, met papier waarop het lijkt alsof je zelf aan de slag kan. Door aan de slag te gaan met kalkpapier konden we de focus leggen op de beelden, en daarmee het verhaal wat de adviseur zelf bij de beelden wil vertellen, met als naslagwerk de teksten die eronder liggen. Zodat de klant ook op zijn dooie gemak alles na kan lezen.

From manifest 1.0 to 2.0

We received requests for the booklets even after the initial success of the first version, prompting us to revise it into Manifesto 2.0. We added the Berenschot model for the organization to the six basic elements of the design philosophy, which is built in layers and includes the organizational model, organizational challenges, and external environment.

New cover

For the original design, we opted for a moleskin-like booklet, a classic choice for people who prefer writing on paper and designers alike. The rounded corners alone give the look and feel of a sketchbook. To make it suitable for the Berenschot Dutch Organization Design booklet in 2015, we chose to make it from cardboard. In 2020, we decided to update it with recycled materials, although we couldn't find a suitable variant of recycled plastic for the thin cover, we found a beautiful recycled paper that showcases the pulp nicely.

Happy with the result

We are pleased with the result, and despite the COVID-19 measures, the booklets are in use, and the feedback has been positive. We're glad we could make this update as we continue to receive requests from customers for these booklets.
