Help people locally to make the right decision...

Introduction

The Radboud University Medical Center has developed an E-nose that can predict if someone has tuberculosis based on a breath sample. This is done using a smart algorithm that compares the breath sample to others. We have developed this animation in multiple languages to ensure clear communication with local populations for necessary research consent.

Challenging target audience

Tuberculosis is still a problem in countries in South America, such as Paraguay, especially in densely populated areas like prisons. Therefore, the Radboud University Medical Center is conducting further research into the effectiveness of the newly developed E-nose and tuberculosis detection in these locations. However, in order to conduct this research, consent must be obtained from prisoners, who must also understand exactly what is being done. That is why we have developed this animation in three languages, which provides clear explanations about this topic and the research.

Testing with the target audience

In the development process of an animation, we believe that user testing is extremely important. When developing a product for a specific target audience, it is important to collaborate and co-create with the target audience, rather than developing a product for them without their input. In this case, we were fortunate to have some local people from Paraguay visiting the Netherlands for the research, who were able to provide us with input. Later, during the animation phase (when the drawings come to life), we incorporated an extra moment to collect local feedback from the actual target audience. The result: a tailored animation that informs and encourages the target audience to participate in this important research!

International collaboration

Many parties are involved in this research to improve public health in countries such as those in South America and to eradicate tuberculosis. Below is a list of the parties involved and images of user testing sessions held with prisoners in Paraguay to test the animation and gather feedback for optimization.
